Iowa trip Day 12 Tuesday Aug. 5th 2014

At the campground Peter found a pamphlet for the Air and Space museum in Rapid City.  Peter wants to be a pilot maybe going into the Air Force when he "grows up" and he's always been interested in war history especially WWII, so this morning we headed to the museum.

It was actually pretty cool and it was free so that part was nice.  They had all these planes outside and then they had a museum inside the hangers.

All the guys had a good time looking at all the planes.

Yep, I'm short!

The boys inside the museum

Now we know!

These pictures were really cool

After the museum, we headed to Deadwood for some shopping and lunch.  By the time we got there, it was pouring!  We found a parking garage and then ran to the nearest restaurant we could find! Unfortunately,  all the poor bikers had the same idea...get out of the rain!  and everything was really busy.

This picture is so funny!  The boys were a little hangry and did not want to wait for their food. Luckily, food came quickly and moods were lifted!

Deadwood is a cool little town with lots of fun stores and neat history.

Sturgis Week!

On the way back to Custer, we ran into a hailstorm.  I felt so bad for all the poor bikers who were stuck outside.  One guy was bald and didn't have a helmet on.  the hail was bouncing off of his bald head, it must have hurt!  We finally pulled over because we could not see a thing and enjoyed the storm.

This guy had his jacket over his head and hunkered down.

After the storm, we continued to Custer to Mount Rushmore.
No rain!

Mom, the boys, and I went on a trail loop to get a closer look at the presidents.

Looking back at the visitors center and shelter...We we about halfway through the trail when the skies opened up and rain just poured down.  We ran for it!  Mom and I had to take our flip flops off and run barefoot, it was crazy!  by the time we got back to the center, we were soaked and so cold.  I bought myself a new warm hoodie, Peter wanted a dry pair of socks, and I bought a blanket we then got some hot chocolate and were all settled to watch the lighting ceremony.

A park ranger came out on stage and talked a little about Mount Rushmore and then showed a video about the four presidents and why they were chosen.  then the audience stood up to sing the National Anthem while the lights slowly lit up the mountain.  It was very moving.

She then had all the vets and those currently serving our country come onto the stage to introduce themselves.  That was really cool to see, I'm glad that so many Americans appreciate and respect the service these men and women provide, despite the disrespect that some of our current leaders show.

These two pictures are of the downpour, before we ran for it!  I LOVE the rain!
